Extensions Consult: 7 Things to Do After Your Appointment (Plus Blowout Tips)
By Santiago Anaya @ASecretHairStylist | September 4, 2026
Your #1 rule after a 15-minute Extensions Consult is simple: lock in your next steps right away, your install date, deposit (if required), and the exact notes we chose for your length, texture, and color match. In Houston, waiting “a few days” can turn into a week fast, and that’s how installs get delayed and hair prep gets rushed.
I do consultations all the time for people searching “hair extensions near me” because they want confidence before they commit. That’s exactly what this visit is for. We sit down one-on-one, talk goals, look at your hair in real life lighting, and I send you out with a clear plan that keeps your natural hair feeling comfortable and looking natural once you’re installed.
The first 24 to 48 hours: confirm, pause chemicals, start prep
Right after your consult, I want you focused on logistics and hair condition. This is the boring stuff that makes the install day smooth.
Do this today: Save your install date, confirm the method and shade notes, and ask me what you should buy now so nothing delays your appointment.
1) Confirm your install date and deposit details
If you’re commuting through Memorial City or Spring Branch along I-10 or the Sam Houston Tollway, schedule in a way that doesn’t force you into two rushed trips. I can usually help you find a time that fits, but I need you to confirm quickly once we agree on the plan.
2) Put chemical services on hold (unless we set a timeline together)
I generally recommend avoiding chemical color, lightening, keratin, and smoothing services for at least 1 to 2 weeks before installation unless I’ve approved a specific timeline for your hair. That includes big changes like balayage or corrective hair color. The reason is simple: I want your hair stable and predictable on install day so the match and the blend stay clean.
3) Start a two-week strengthening routine now
You don’t need a cabinet full of products. You do need consistency: one protein-focused treatment weekly, one moisture mask weekly, less heat, and a quick trim if your ends are fraying. I’m big on education, and I’ll tell you straight if something is going to compromise hair health. People come to me for haircut work, hair styling, and long-term hair health, not quick fixes that fall apart.
The first week before install: Houston sweat, chlorine, and “don’t gamble with the blend”
Houston heat and humidity are no joke. Sweat, salt, and chlorine can throw off how your hair behaves and how shades read. If you’re doing anything that involves heavy sweating, swimming, or a beach weekend, I want you to plan around it.
4) Skip swimming and intense workouts 48 to 72 hours before install
In general, avoid heavy sweating, swimming pools, and lake or beach days within 48 to 72 hours of your scheduled install. Chlorine and saltwater can dry your hair out and leave buildup, and that’s the opposite of what we want right before we install extensions.
5) Be careful with styling products and “miracle” oils
If you’ve been searching “haircut near me” or “blowout hair” tips, you’ve probably seen a lot of shine products. Keep it simple pre-install. Avoid heavy silicones, waxy pomades, and thick scalp oils that can leave residue. Clean hair, healthy cuticle, and controlled heat wins every time.
Product basics I want in your bag before install day
A consult is short, but the plan is specific. If you want your install to start on time, I’d rather you shop once and be done.
My short pre-install shopping list
- Sulfate-free shampoo to keep your scalp clean without stripping.
- Conditioner focused on slip so detangling stays gentle.
- Soft bristle brush or a detangling brush that doesn’t snag.
- Heat protectant if you do a blowout or hot tools.
And yes, I do get asked about “blowout fade.” That term usually comes up more in barbering, but the idea applies: keeping your style looking clean as it grows out. With extensions, the goal is the same. We keep the blend smooth at the roots and avoid product buildup so everything sits right.
When to reach out before your install (and how I’ll help)
If something changes between the consult and the install, tell me. That includes a sudden hair color idea, a planned brazilian blowout, or you realizing your schedule needs to shift because you’re coming in from Westchase, Bunker Hill Village, or Hunters Creek Village.
"If you want someone who acutally cares about your hairs health without a question Santiago is the most genuine hair stylist. He will give you honesty and good feedback. If he feels like it will ruin your hair he will tell you."
one of our regulars
That’s exactly how I work. If your plan needs adjusting, I’d rather make the call early than “hope it’s fine” on install day. If you want more context on how I approach consults in general, read my consultations in Memorial City and Spring Branch guide. And if you’re still deciding, extensions consult results breaks down what we’re solving for when we pick a method and match.
Quick reassurance: If you’re unsure about washing, blowout timing, or a last-minute hair styling change, reach out before you experiment. I’d rather answer a simple question than have you show up stressed.
